King Charles I King, James I and Oliver Cromwell Divine Right of Kings

The Divine Right of Kings means that the king was specifically chosen by God and had the divine right to do whatever he wanted.

King James I: Queen Elisabeth died without an heir, so King James I was king because he was related to King Henry VIII. King James I was king of three countries, Ireland, Scotland, and England. In Scotland he was known as King James VI. King James believed in the The Divine Right of Kings so he thought he could do anything he wanted to. But the parliament thought differently. The parliament thought that they were there to keep a check on the king and help him, but the king completely ignored parliament. This disagreement eventually started a civil war under his sons rain King Charles. King James eventually died of a stroke.

King Charles I: Charles was born in 1600 and was the second son of King James I. he became king in 1625 when his brother died. All of Charles’ troubles began when William Laud told Charlie to make all his kingdoms Anglikin. This started the bishop’s war. It was a war between Scotland and England. The parliament sentenced laud to death. All this led to the English civil war. Oliver Cromwell fought the king within the parliament.

Oliver Cromwell : Oliver Cromwell became part of parliament in 1628. Because he was in parliament he fought the king Charles. He gathered an army to fight the king. He let anyone into his army. He was never in a war so he studied other wars and used old war tactics which made him very good at tactics. King Charles I was eventually captured and was beheaded.
