The Peace of Augsburg

The Prodestant Reformation caused a disruption that each country handled in their own way.  Spain was very catholic, England became proestant, Italy went catholic, and France was both. In the holy roman empire the Lutheran and the catholic. The holy roman emperor was more of a figurehead than a king, so the princes of the states in the country chooses the religion. The schmalkaldic league was the group of princes who fought against the catholic princes. In 1555 the Holy Roman emperor tried to stop the fighting. There was a permanent separation between the catholic states and the Lutheran states. This was called the Peace of Augsburg, it had 3 main rules.

  1. The princes could decide the religion of the state. There was a grace period for people to move to a state that had the religion that they believed in.
  2. If a Lutheran state conquered catholic state the Catholic’s didn’t have to change religion.
  3. Some nobles and certain cities did not have to follow the states religion.

Now the Lutherans were part of the society because before they were viewed heretics because the country’s religion was catholic.
