Galileo Galilei was an Italian scientist. He was born in 1564 in Pisa, Italy. He learned music from his father and studied medicine at the university of Pisa. Some things he did were improve the telescope and discover Jupiter’s moons. He is most remembered for the advancement of the heliocentric view of the universe.
He was supposed to study medicine because a doctor was a high paying job, but accidently went to a geometry lecture and begged his father to let him study mathematics instead. He was the first scientist to combine mathematics and the science of motion. One day he saw a telescope in a shop and decided to make his own and improve it. He used it to study the solar system, the moon, and the stars more detailed than ever before. During the time Galileo lived, the main view of the universe was that the earth was in the center, but he believed that the sun was in the center. The church disagreed with him because they thought the scriptures proved the earth was in the center. The church put him under house arrest for the rest of his life, and all his teachings were banned. (This was later lifted.) He died in 1642 when he was 77 years old.
