The Mayflower

It all started when King James made religious changes to the Catholic liturgy. Because of this, the pilgrims moved to Holland. However, the pilgrims were farmers and Holland wasn’t a good place for farming. The pilgrims decided to try and make a deal with the London company. The deal would give them money to buy a fleet to try to start a new colony in America. A man named Thomas Weston helped out the pilgrims and arranged for a colony called New England to be formed by the colony of Virginia. The two ships that went on the journey were the Speedwell and the Mayflower. The Speedwell brought the Pilgrims from Holland to Southampton, England where they boarded the Mayflower. But just after the ships left, the Speedwell started to leak. After they got the leak fixed, they set sail again. But the ship leaked again which caused several people to start to think the leaks were caused by someone who didn’t want to go on the trip. The people didn’t want to get rid of the ship because they had spent lots of money on it, but they abandoned it because it could not float. All of the stuff on the Speedwell was put onto the Mayflower and it continued alone. After 66 days at sea, they finally made it to their destination, America at present day Cape Cod.
