The Habsburg Monarchy

The Habsburg Monarchy started with the Rudolf I becoming king of Germany in 1273. In 1482, Maximilian I ruled over the Netherlands because of marriage. Both these territories where in the Empire. Rudolf I’s nephew and successor, Charles V, also inherited Spain and its colonies in 1516 and ruled the Habsburg Empire. The Habsburg family started with the Habsburg Castle in Switzerland, and after 1279 came to rule in Austria. The Duchy of Austria was part of the Kingdom of Germany in the Holy Roman Empire. King Rudolf I of Germany of the Habsburg family gave the Duchy of Austria to his sons at the Diet of Augsburg which made the Austrian hereditary lands. From then, the Habsburg dynasty was also known as the House of Austria. Between 1438 and 1806 the Habsburg Archduke of Austria was elected Holy Roman Emperor. The Spanish branch went disappeared in 1700. The Austrian branch was divided between different areas of the family from 1564 until 1665. The Habsburg Dynasty married people in other countries so that they could rule those countries increase instead of using War. They tried to add Switzerland to their Kingdom, but the Swiss revolted. The Habsburg Dynasty also created the Golden Bull. the Golden Bull was supposed to keep the pope from interfering with government issues. it didn’t work that well but it did prevent the Pope from certain things.
