The setting in the book The Knight of the White Cross, written by G. A. Henty, takes place in medieval England during, before, and after the siege of Rhodes. Gervase, the main character, has been made a Knight. He sets off on a voyage in a galley to find Pirates and defeat them. They soon come across an enemy galley and they quickly board it. The Pirates are taking on by surprise and are quickly defeated. Most of the Pirates jump overboard and swim to land. While the Knight’s are sailing away they turn around to find that the Pirates have ganged up again, found a large fishing boat, and are following the knights. Weary from the battle, the knights try to flee but the Pirates are faster. The knight’s try to flee to a nearby Island. After quickly leaving their ship docked in the harbor they ran into the forest. The Pirates come chasing after them but were surprised when the knight’s, and the slaves of the knight’s (who have been promised freedom) come out from behind a hill and attack. The Pirates are defeated again and the knight’s travel home. Character development in G. A. Henty books are shown by actions. You know that the character is developing when he or she handles problems first things that come up better.
